I love uncovering the gardens and finding little bits of green and growing things under the leaf litter or the frost blankets.
The perennial pots that I buried in the vegetable garden look like they did pretty well over winter. I added compost to a couple more containers, and wired small pots to the tops of some of the fence posts; I'll use these for herbs and annuals.
As you can see in the above photo, I also put the pile of gravel to use by spreading it up the hill along side the garden. I had grand visions of making a set of steps between the gardens here, but the terrain is just too difficult for me to work with. If I had a tractor with a bucket or a small excavator, I might continue with my vision, but my bad back and a spade just ain't cutting it. Work smarter, not harder, right? I have some ideas in store for my terraced garden that will hopefully be easier for this fat old broad to handle and hopefully as effective as the block retaining walls. I just need to wait for the ground to thaw so I can actually work the topsoil a little.
I was salvaging some yucca plants that had been dug up in the foundation area and was going to plant them on the back side of the new house, near the stone wall. I couldn't believe my eyes when I found moose tracks not two feet from the back door of the addition! It looked as though there may have been two moose, and they walked right through the back yard, across the new septic and leach field, and off into the pasture.
My size 10 dogs, for comparison. |
I can't believe the dog never even barked. Some watchdog, huh?
